UK Rippers Ben Ineson and Tom Rodgers RIP
by superfly
Posted: Jan 15, 2009
Apologies to bring you such bad news.
Just heard from a friend that Ben Ineson and Tom Rodgers were killed yesterday in a car crash. These two were the life and soul of every race here in the U.K, this is a very sad day indeed for Mountainbiking.

Ben Ineson and Tom Rodgers were the real deal. They like you, lived to ride and ride they did. Not only were these two the main characters who entertained you whilst in the queue at the uplift. They could both ride a bike and I mean ride a bike.
Signed up to ride for Astrix Europe in 2009 Ben was indeed destined for big things.
Already racing in the Elite Category at the NPS (He was in a UCI trade team) and still a junior he would still land himself inside the top ten! He was also making waves at the World Cup series. If he wasn't racing I'm sure he would have been a catwalk model.
Tom Rodgers was just back from New Zealand, cutting his trip short so he could get into training here in the cold and wet U.K and ride even more than chill out on the beach in NZ. He raced in the Expert category and was a top ten finisher and on his way into the Elite top flight.
Tom worked and rode for All Terrain Cycles and had a huge infectious smile and laugh. He lived for riding his bike and enjoyed life to the full, that is the way he ran it.
RIP Guys..

apparently (found this on southerndownhill.co.uk) that ben died on the impact and tom hugged him till he died minutes later. Just shows the freiendship they shared
thats gonna be weird not seeing them at the races, i didnt speak to them or anything but like we always see the bright blue and white flying down, r.i.p
i cannot beleive it, its sickening to here this news, i cant begin to imagine what their parents are going through and it seems like such a waste of amazing talent. its disturbing to here that one hugged the other till he died. i hope they rest in peace tom and ben.
im sorry to start an argument, but hardly disturbing, he must've been so upset and was about to die himself. they were like best friends you know
wow u aint starting an argument, i just didnt want to here that . never new they were that gooda friends.
Yeah, not the time nor the place.
RIP. They were some of the best riders on the DH circuit, and so young as well. They could have been huge, Ineson showed talent the excelled over some of the pro's. Such a loss of talent, but as many people have already said, dont just RIP, but bloody RIP it up up there as well!

The sport of downhill mountain biking his been robbed of two rising stars with their death in a car crash.
Tom Rodgers, 21, from Langcliffe, and his friend 18 year-old Ben Ineson, from Selside, died when their Peugeot 306 crashed into a wall and hedge on the A65 near Long Preston on Wednesday afternoon.
Mr Rodgers, who had worked for All Terrain Cycles both at its original shop in Cross Hills and then in Saltaire for over four years, was the 2007 Senior English Champion.
This year he was was riding for the All Terrain Cycles team in the elite division and had just returned from New Zealand where he had been competing.
His younger brother, Ben, 18, also a downhill racer, is still out there.
His parents, teachers Keith and Sue, are understood to be working abroad on a two-year contract. They last saw their boys at Christmas time before they set off abroad.
Work colleagues at Salts Mill were still in a state of disbelief today at the death of their "full on and unforgettable" friend.
All Terrain Cycles boss Tony Booth said today:" It is horrendous. Two of their friends here have been up to the site already to pay their respects.
"Tom was such a full-on person, full of life. He lived for racing - everything was about bikes.
"He was a very good worker and ran the race team. He was very keen and enthusiastic – such a bubbly full-on character. You’d not forget him if you met him.
"Tom had been due to be in work today and when he failed to arrive with us by 9.30am we thought it was unusual. We tried to ring his telephone but got nowhere.
"Tom had curtailed his New Zealand trip and was not actually due to come back until March to start the new season."
It was Tom’s dedication which helped forge the team’s success.
"All the momentum and enthusiasm came from Tom," said Mr Booth Ben too had been a member of the team last year and there was talk about him getting semi-sponsorship this year and was looking for a new team.
The youngest of four children, Ben was the son of Sally and Mick Ineson and was ranked number one in the junior section of British Cycling’s Downhill Mountainbike Championship.
Last summer he competed in Canada and Slovenia as well as in the UCI World Cup at Fort William, Scotland.
"This is a big loss to the sport and to everyone who knew them both," said Mr Booth.
He said they were still considering how to progress with the team next year but he believed the two friends would want them to carry on.
North Yorkshire police are appealing for witnesses. They said the pair had been in a red Peugeot 306 car which came off the road crashed into a wall and hedge.
It is understood the car had been travelling away from Settle when the accident happened near Mearbeck – between Settle and Long Preston – at 1.30pm on Wednesday.
All three emergency services attended and the two men – who were cut from the wreckage by firefighters from Settle and Bentham – were pronounced dead at the scene.
The road was closed for more than four hours and local diversions were put into place.
Police want to speak to anyone who witnessed the crash or saw the car beforehand. Those who can help should contact Traffic Constable Mark Tiffany at Skipton’s road policing unit on 0845 6060 247.

i remember seeing Tom win the caersws cup for his category, and take the top time, awesome rider! RIP
Very sad news indeed, i met tom at Ae last year doing some camera footage, to say he was a very affable young man, such a waste of young talent, my thoughts go to both families and friends.
I dont think he had the intension of being rude, just expressing (i hope) how shocked he is because his m8 would have some sort of connection with thoughs two.
i'm gona get my m8 to treat tht bike now with more respect than he already does!! and i was jus expressing

Its a truely saddening though to think that these guys wouldn't be with us any more, this my sound strange but I found when my dad died 3 years ago in a car crash that the real saddness really hits you when u find something that relates alot to that person, i found a book of my dads half read with a book mark in it, this too for ben and tom, just the though of there bikes sitting unridden and there talent and future wasted makes me feel so sad.
having not known these boys, its not my place to type lots, but to the families and friends out there my/our thoughts are with you. Its good to see people with such strong passions like these boys did.
To those close, its now your job to keep their memory alive!
