The Mutts Nuts - SixSixOne Ankle Biters

Posted: Jan 28, 2009

There are a lot of shiny new things out there that look good on this screen, but after a season on them they may well of let you down. In fact, some you wouldn't piss on, if they were on fire.

Here we give you the inside line, "Warts and all"...

The new Mutts Nutts aka Dogs B&**%X section will feature tried, tested and hammered products that stand up to the test of time that are worth their weight in gold. We would show you a pic of said dogs bits but Tyler aka Brule said I couldn't embarrass Hensley my dog in public.

First off then is this little treasure from the guys at the Valencia Group and their 661 brand - the ankle biters.

Used and abused

Used and abused

Now if like me your ankles have seen better days, 10 pins and a metal plate from skating Dickers Bowl at Birmingham Wheels in 1987 is my curse. Then these should be right up your street.

How do they work? First off remove your insole and place it on top of the insole of the 661 Ankle Biter. This has several faint white lines printed onto them to help you cut to size both at the top and bottom of the insole. Don't worry there is a specific left and right one so you don't need a degree in craft work.
TOP TIP: Measure twice, cut once!

No need to hold your nose

No need to hold your nose

You then insert your 661 Ankle Biter into your shoe and then your original insole goes on top.

Ankle support?
You will really like the molded plastic cups and extra padding that protect your protruding ankle bones on both sides (inside and out) for when you tumble down a rock, root or even hard packed sections of the course. They say the neoprene's vented, my bum! On a hot summers day your socks are going to be damper than Spoiled Goods and Kakah's socks we found at the end of their beds in Vegas last year. Good job I live in Great Britain where the Sun is currently in hibernation. What it does do is help keep some of that mud and those annoying little stones out, you know the ones!

Turn your low tops into hi-tops!

Turn your low tops into hi-tops!

The ankle support comes from the wrap around neoprene with those side plastic ankle cups on there that velcro at the front of your foot. Then there is a further thin velcro strap that comes across the front to secure and bolt everything down.

How did they hold up to long term abuse? O.K both after over a year of some serious abuse 3-4 days a week have finally bit the dust. That includes being thrown in the washing machine (still in shoes) at a 40 degree wash and spin dry every two weeks with a splash of Persil. I'm all for a bit of sewing my Dainese body armor but these were not repairable I'm afraid.

Does it matter? Well I still run them and they still feel secure though of course they would be even better if those straps hadn't broken away.

Last but not least there is a hand pull tab at the back to ensure all is in place.

Do these get Hensley's approval? Injured ankle or just prevention, these are the mutts nuts, "Woof" (Yes).

Hensley would cock his leg on these.

Why you didn't use the fiveten impact high? wouldn't it make more sense than upgrade the low version with the ankle guard?

I prefer/own a pair of Five Ten impact low, (highs are like correction footwear) and have a permanent ankle injury in my right ankle, so this is perfect for me and my current footwear.

Good review, I'll buy a pair, anyone want to buy the left one?

well maybe 'grinsekater' some people allready have a pair of riding shoes and cant afford/or want to upgrade to the high 5-10's (they fall apart in weeks anyway) yet they still wish to have some ankle protecion?

"they fall apart in weeks anyway" uve obviously never had a pair of 5-10's, they are the best thing a flat pedal rider will ever buy and the quality is amazing.

I've had my 5.10 shoes since 2007 and they're still holding together great. In my opinion, the 5.10 low impact shoes are a fashion fad. But agreed, the high impacts do make you look somewhat special.

i have those ankle things and for me they suck way to bad. everytime i use them the twist and give me blisters on my arch and they don't come up high enough really to protect my ankle bone from impacts not to mention they are unvbelievably awkward to put your shoe on once you've put the ankle protector on and yes i have tried them in both the 5.10 and marzocchi shoes overall i hate them but that i just because they don't fit my foot.

I'm guessing if your running standard low tops in whatever style shoe and you have an ankle injury or want further protection then buying these for £20 would make a lot of sense. There is a credit crunch out there I here!

Rather than spending £80 on a brand new pair of high tops to cover your injured ankle for a few weeks, you could run these for that period then store and stay with your more comfortable low tops..

Sorry but i see no ankle protection on these ones. They only protect you against rock impacts, and from scraping your skin. I broke my ankle badly 2 years ago and have a lot of titanium hardware inside. I bought a 661 ankle race brace pro, which i believe have the right type of protection by securing your ankle in place preventing from non natural movements that lead to sprains and braking bones which are the main causes of ankle injuries.

I come from an mx background and use thor 50/50s. I love them, but some people may think they are a little to stiff if they're not used to mx boots.

I believe those mutt's nuts came in contact with my leg after I got him excited on Saturday... My fault, I shouldn't have riled him up!

I prefer the flexibility of a low top, but my ankle bones have lots of scar tissue from smaking chainstays, etc., so I've used these in the past. They are not as comfortable as without because of the neoprene straps that go down to the base. Which makes me wonder how they would compare to some of the other options from THE, Fox, Adidas, etc...

the high top 5.10s give you ankle support by lacing them up and also protection, low tops with ankle guard look to have a little less support than high tops (better flexibility, more movement) with the benefit of some protection on your bones

If you wearing a ankle brace and you end up having a uber gnarly crash you could ended up braking you tibia instead of your ankle... It has happened many times in other sports. I know it's unlikely but it is possible.

Think I will stick with my five ten highs.
However they are an arse to get your feet in.
Would consider if they where easier to get on with a low show.
Or have I just got odd feet?????????

I wouldn't expect any footwear product to last if you are going to put them in the washing machine every two weeks! I find mine are good for impact protection. Not so supportive, but i don't think they are supposed to be. And they're cheap, so who cares if they wear out, just get new ones.

For ankle protction, I just cut off the ankle protection pads from my soccer shin pads once they have done their season. Slip them on, then put your socks over them and there you go! They don't provide support, just impact protection.

Pro-tec makes ankle guards also. I've had mine for 3 years and wear them every time I ride. crank bite sucks!

i have had two pairs of 661 shoes in my life. i was very unhappy with the quality of the shoes.the actual upper was actually pretty good and very durable. they both looked good even after a whole summer.the real problem was with everything involving the soles. the soles felt very think, cheap and fell apart in no time. the first pair i had was the launch taki. i thought that the softer sole would help give more traction but i noticed no difference. in about a two months a hole had started. not all the way through but almost there. in 3 months there was a hole and the sole was actually HALF OFF the shoe. my reasoning behind even buying a second pair was because i thought that maybe it was just the thin soft sole. my second pair was all black leather but i can't remember the name(descend i think). 661 said they were good for day to day use so thats what i used them for.same story with these shoes. got a hole in no time but atleast the sole stayed on this time. also on both shoes i felt that the foot support was very lacking. it was like some cheap paper almost(hard to describe) that wore out in no time so you were walking on the actuall rubber sole(very incomfortable). also i have noticed that for 2009 both these shoes are gone (that really tells you something). because of this bad experiance i am not the fan of 661 i used to be and especially regarding footwear. (i really like the raji gloves though)
