ODI Ruffians

Lock-Ons. There really is only one name when we talk about Lock-On Grips. 99 percent of us don't live in sunny California. Rain, Rain go away and come again another day.
Unless you've a set of ODI's that is.
Unless you've a set of ODI's that is.
25 years ago if you had a set of "Mushrooms" down at the local BMX track you were the dogs bits. Zero blisters meant you were shredding all day long to the envy of your mates.
2008 and nothings changed. Say Lock-On and the next letters outta your gob are, "ODI". They invented these and it's them we have to thank for keeping us trackside and outta the bleechers, away from the trees and on course.
For those of you that still wire your grips on, "Are you on crack cocaine"? Lock-ons are the only way forward kids and if you're into holding something of a narrower diameter for that personnel feel then the Ruffian is the one.
I'm used to something a little fatter but don't get a complex, I'm sure you've heard, "Size doesn't matter"...(Editor's Note: Si has small hands so it only feels bigger, not to true spec.)
Yes we all know they have been around for ages, we're still catching up here in Europe and the Gold and Pink are new to us this year.
Pictured without the lock-ons to show the internals, you get a long thin nylon sleeve which the rubber grip is bonded to. The lock-on end collars then clamp onto the nylon tube via small diameter Allen keys, one on each collar. Tighten them up and "Bobs your Uncle and Fannys your Aunt". Don't forget your end caps as "Coring" i.e sticking your bar into you is one of the worst injuries you can have. If this happens it's like removing a cork from the bottle, only difference is that cork bit is your flesh and blood. According to Dr. Singh from Birmingham it's a b45t4rd to sort out.
ODI state they make their grips in house in the U.S.A. None of this sourcing the cheapest materials and labor possible from the Far East. That is what we like to see, I bet they are allowed to fly the stars and stripes flag outside their offices. Over here in the U.K the do gooders call the "Filth" (Feds) and we can be asked to take the St.Georges or Union Jack flag down. Long live America I say and the ability to be proud of your country! We're too politically correct over here.

Old Skool and back in the day: Magic Mushrooms, not to be confused with the ones you find down the local woods

Not quite sure what to make of 'gold' grips!
i do have this gold ones.. extra bling on my bike!
they way too grippy tho, they easily rip gloves off..

this thing i dont like about ruffians, when i ride a pair of comfy bmx grips for a wile, then buy ruffians, i start to get HUGE calices
but once those calices toughen up, the ruffians prove themselves as being the best grips ive ever ridden...
Rubber compound on those gold ones is much harder than on the black ones, I didn't like mine at all, they look good but felt really horrible on longer downhills, or if ridden without gloves.

Editors Note: True, Tyler has seen my weapon of mass destruction, he kept following me into the bathroom at PinkTaco HQ in the Venetian when we were at Interbike. Pervert. Watch out kids..
yeah your a hard guy. haha i dont give a Fu*k what you think. so go ahead and be a f*g. cuz your just making yourself look bad. O no did i say cuz why dont you go and be a bitch about it.

have you ever heard of The Bike Company? I think its around in Irvine..i dunno..when i went in they had brian lopes actual IBIS bike for display there and they were selling the gold and pink grips there for like 25 bucks with the locks..

Mushrooms again! Now that's what i'm talkin' bout. I bought the last ones in Bulgaria and now there are going to be more! I shold also mention, I have the dual compond, which are the muts nuts.
Don't bother with the white ones. I bought a set of the Sette white grips and after one ride, they weren't so white anymore!
I tried that with the Sette ones but with no luch, even used a heavy type of detergent to scrub them with. Nada. Maybe the Odi's could be a better compound?
Or just get a spare set to put on for "display purposes"...at the end of the day, the compound provides excellent grip/vibration reduction...remember: Practicality over fashion.
Given a few days of riding in the mud and loam, those "gold" grips are gonna look like a "tan" coloured grips. A perfect match to a Chromag Lynx saddle.
I've actually been running the Gold set on my SS pretty much all season and they are holding up amazing. Had the white's during the winter and ya they turned ugly really quick, but the golds are great so far.
I got a pair of it and I'm loving it since.....really can feel the terrain condition with my hands on them.
they wear well quick ive had 2 pairs
but not just a one off, bontrager earls are soo soo much betta... no jokes!

ive ridden ruffians for years and remain my favorite. i never had colored ones. im about to get the pink ones for my black sunday, should look pretty badass.
ODIs are THE best, ive got some and my hands have never ever come off the bars even in terrential rain!
yeah i got the white ones put after a ride they are no longer white but look dope for the first bit and they wouldn't fit on my atomlab bars so i put them on with a mallet...lol
I had these grips but very unfortuently i moved them from bike to bike to many times and not only did the screw get striped but the linning on the inside of the grip to hold the screw fell out!
It's F**KING shit!
I got a gold/black one and after four or five times of DH riding, the whole outer rubber sleeve just COME OFF the inner plastic.
I just give it back to HK dealer!

My freind got some and within 2 weeks it was all just worn down smooth plastic. so i didn't get them.
you know how they said to put bar ends in?
well my bro's bike corked me and he had old grips that were bmx style without the big ring thing on the inside of the grip (you know on the left grip the big circle thing on the right side of it) anyway this grip had rubber over the ends of the bar and they still corked me

Bar Plugs? You can use normal bar plugs but ODI have two different sorts. One is a thik plastic outer cap that is held by a wedge that expands inside the bar with a Philips screwdriver. The other only fits newer lock-rings. It is a hard plastic disc the fits into a tiny channel on the inside of the lock ring, which you have to run just a little bit off the end of the bars. When you look at a bike with the white ODI logo on them, that's what is happening there. You can leave it there permanently as it comes off with the grip when you undo the locking bolts.

i have some black ones.
have had them for about 2 months, kinda wearing badly.
still great grips for the money.

I have the Ruffian MX's, I love them. Great waffle grip on the bottom, while maintaining solid grip all around.
I would highly recommend.
not a huge fan of them, i like really wide grips for comfort on the many whistler days... i really like sunlines or bintragers

Also have the Ruffian MX. Had a pair of black Ruffian before, and switched to the MX. More comfortable I'd say, and better grip. In my opinion, anyway.

I use the Rogue on my AM bike for comfort and the Ruffian on my DJ for perfect 'feel'. The Rogue has more leverage when I'm twisting the grips like a throttle to bring the back of the bike up when I'm trying to stay light above rough ground.
I love ODIs because they stay put when you want them too. The other benefit is that you can take a grip off in seconds when you want to change, add or remove brake levers and shifter pods. For this reason alone they are worth their weight in gold.
